In 2019 - we are going to begin independent reading during class - students are welcome to bring a book from home or I will have enough books for each student in my class room! Each grading period, students will be required to read the following genres - books must be a minimum 150 pages in length and they will be required to complete 2 mini projects per grading period over what they have read:

1st 9 weeks - Fiction
2nd 9 weeks - Non-Fiction
3rd 9 weeks - Non-Fiction & Student Choice (any book they'd like)
4th 9 weeks - Student Choice & Major Reading Project

We will also be reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck as a class in January of 2020 beginning when we return from Christmas Break. Students are encouraged to have their own copy so they can annotate and take notes while we study the novel as a class. I will do a book order for students once the novel unit begins, but feel free to buy one for your student as well.

If you or your parents/guardians have concerns or questions about ANYTHING, please don't hesitate to email me at tyates@magnoliaisd.org.. I check my email often and will get back to you quickly, usually within the day - remember, I'm here for you.

If you'd like to set up a parent conference or have any questions at all regarding your student, email me first as this is the best way to contact me directly and we can set up a phone or in-person conference.

I can't wait to learn more about each of you as the school year progresses, but first, here's a little about me...

I grew up in Houston and attended Jersey Village High School where my interests were in journalism, my sport was rodeo and my passion was raising animals. I went on to Texas A&M University - College Station where I majored in communications and journalism, was the editor in chief of a major campus magazine, and graduated in 2009 with honors. I knew in my heart that teaching English was where I needed to be! I quickly went back to school to get my teaching certificate and this is my 7th year in education. Every year is a new adventure in teaching and I truly love my job.

When I'm not busy at #westnation, I'm most likely watching my daughter play Mustang Volleyball or with my  son, at a Friday night Mustangs football game, yelling at a Saturday Aggies Football game or cheering on the Houston Texans on Sunday!  My children, Ruby, who is a Junior at West and my son, Beau, a second grader at Magnolia Elementary, keep me busy. Both enjoy sports, volleyball and baseball respectively. To be a part of a community like Magnolia has been a blessing and we love participating in and being a part of the community that we love so much.

I'm looking forward to another great year at Magnolia West
WE STAND TOGETHER, WE STRIVE TOGETHER, WE SUCCEED TOGETHER!

This year, students will have their own notebooks. Over the course of the year they will be filled with warm-ups, notes on grammar and various genres of writing, quick-writes, ideas, and class projects. These will stay in my classroom and students will be able to take them home at the end of the year so they can see all of their accomplishments and how far they've come in their writing from the beginning to the end of the year.

In addition to in-class writings and assignments, students will also work through an online program called Edgenuity - students are encouraged to take the program seriously as some daily and quiz grades will come from their progress on the program.
